God is Enough
Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope. Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never end. They are new every dawn; abundant is your faithfulness. I say to myself, "The LORD is my inheritance; therefore I will wait for him." The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who follows him; it is good to hope and be still for the salvation of the LORD.
Would you believe this is from Lamentations 3:21-26? Considering that lamentations are cries of sadness, there is in it a song of hope! My idea of a lament is that it is a cry out of a very intense feeling of grief. Yet for the author, in the midst of his grief, he still has hope. And his hope is not based on what he saw. What he saw and felt was that God had left him. Everything he had was lost. His nation was conquered and the city of their God was destroyed - burned and pillaged.
Yet, in the midst of all these physical and emotional hopelessness, the first thing the author remembered is God's great love and compassions. Instead of looking at what was lost, he looked at what was not lost. And he saw God's hand at work. God's love did not allow them to die and his compassions is always there. Note also he used a plural for compassions.
Every day is a new day for God's abundant faithfulness. For me, this means that God is always faithful. To say that the Lord is my inheritance is to say that the Lord alone is enough for me. He is my treasure. With this, we also mean that God alone is enough. Even if everything is lost - God will be enough.
Therefore we rely on the goodness of the Lord to restore us. We hope in the Lord even if things seem hopeless. Because in the Lord, there is hope. We writhe and twist in hope in a hopeless situation. When we have hope, we wait and still ourselves until the Lord comes to save us.
Let us continue to have hope and be still before the Lord. For the Lord will surely save us. Our only hope and salvation in such a situation is the Lord.
For us - God's children, the Lord is enough.
